Refuge Language's ethos is to create a stronger, more diverse Northern Ireland by empowering refugees and asylum seekers to integrate into society.
We teach ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) to Refugees and Asylum Seekers in several locations across Belfast. In our courses students learn the English language, as well as the cultural information, required to adapt to life in NI. Courses are taught by experienced and passionate ESOL tutors. All our teachers are qualified in teaching ESOL, with either a CELTA, BA TESOL or MA TESOL. Classes help students build relationships with others who have been through similar experiences. Through community engagement, classes also allow students to build relationships with other Northern Irish residents. Additionally, we run events, trips and tours for our students to help them get a better understanding of Northern Ireland.
Our General ESOL courses follow a ‘Skills for Life’ curriculum, practicing relevant topics through the study of Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, Vocabulary and Grammar. We also run conversation-only groups where you will get to practice English with both international people and local NI residents.
What drives us
Fostering connections and well-being through community-building inside and outside our classes, we strive to alleviate social isolation, promoting a supportive and inclusive environment for all.
To equip Refugees and Asylum Seekers with the linguistic and cultural skills needed to get jobs, make friends and contribute to Northern Irish society, and to nurture and support this process.
By fostering connections and community both within and beyond our classes, we aim to diminish social isolation and enhance overall well-being for a more supportive and interconnected experience.
Promoting mental well-being through the establishment of purpose and routine, our aim is to positively impact individuals, fostering resilience and stability in their mental health journeys.
Championing equality and diversity in all endeavors, we strive to create an inclusive environment for both students and staff, fostering a culture of respect and understanding.
Dedicated to excellence, we allocate time and resources to our students, ensuring a supportive environment that fosters growth, learning, and the pursuit of academic and personal success.
